Immune Boosting Tips
As we approach a change in season it is important to support our immune systems. The winter months are commonly labeled “flu and cold season” but there are many factors as to why we get sick more. It is often a time of increased emotional stressors, consumption of processed sugar, and lack of sunlight. Here are some ways to support your body to better adapt to this season, plus some of our favorite products to keep on hand:
Chiropractic care
Prioritizing your nervous system health to be better prepared to handle and overcome stress is the number one thing you can do for your family’s health; year-round and especially during the winter months.
Get outside
It is definitely not as easy to get outside when the weather is colder but it is the best way to for our bodies to make vitamin D; sunlight is preferred over any supplement.
Sleep
Getting good, quality sleep and waking up feeling well-rested is important for the immune system to be functioning optimally. When you aren’t getting good sleep, or not resting when you feel under the weather, your stress hormones like cortisol can’t regulate properly. This leaves your nervous system in a state of fight or flight and susceptible to more sickness.
Quality, organic, whole food
We’re big on getting nutrients from real food versus having to rely on supplementation. Here are some of our favorite immune boosting, nutrient-dense foods:
- Bone broth
- Fermented foods
- Animal fats
- Raw honey
- Garlic, ginger, turmeric, oregano
We incorporate these foods by making a lot of soups, roasts, and curries which are extra cozy and delicious in the colder months.
Elderberry
Elderberry is an antiviral. Elderberry syrup can be taken as a preventative measure in small doses during peak seasons. Look for brands that are organic and stay away from added sugar. Brands: Tippecanoe Herbs, Herbal Key Apothecary, Anima Mundi, Organic Olivia
ION* Gut Support aids digestion like a probiotic but also: supports your natural good bacteria, protects from environmental toxins and allergens, promotes immune function, and strengthens the gut lining! They also have a sinus spray to support nasal microbiome in addition to other products.
It is really that simple to support your immune system! You don’t need a ton of crazy supplements to get through the colder months. It comes down to how your nervous system can adapt, lifestyle, and consuming nutritious food.
